The shape of The wood slice cut from the Coffee Branch Can be round or oval like, Slices with the shape of a heart are common.
Actually I let the coffee plant itself determine the final shape which the pendants, medallions or earrings will have. Here nature dictates and the artists refines.

coffee earringThe coffee wood piece shown here was coated with
the LUCENTA liquid silver emulsion.

After printing the silver image in the ordinary photographic manner, The finished piece was made into an earring. It can also be made into a medallion, a pendant, brooch or bracelet. The piece only weights between 3 - 4 grams.

Jewelry on Coffee Wood is so easy
to make. In fact any other wood can also be made light sensitive with a

all The Coffee jewelry

varnished.

to make wood
immune to insect attack
and attain archival
permanency, the entire
finished piece must be varnished,
back, edges
and front.

Coffee Jewelry and Art on Coffee Wood can last for hundreds of years if properly
made

A varnish overcoat will make the piece a lot more brilliant, with
life in the shaddows revealing details in the wood and image.
It will make it water proof and impart resistance for handling.

Clear Hard epoxy resins can be used if the coffee jewelry is to
be handled very often with a lots of wear and tear, for example
in the making of key rings.

Before applying the liquid photo
emulsion  I Prepare The Coffee Wood

Some Properties of Coffee wood :

1) it is easier to peel off the bark of the
coffee log or stick after slicing when the
coffee wood is still humid. Taking the bark
or skin off the log will speed up drying of
the cut  slice.

2) to have a uniform light color, without
localized darker patches: I dry the cut slices
standing upright so they will ventilate and
oxidize evenly.

Drying the slices of the
coffee wood of
the size shown here takes
about 24 hrs ( 3.5cm diameter, 3-4 mm thick )

  3) Coffee wood is of a light color, when
the branches have been recently cut, it is very
soft and easy to cut in slices with a hand
saw. If it has been left to dry for
too many months, the coffee tannins in the
wood in combination with light and air will
harden it  like a rock, making it hard to work
even with power tools.

4) For Making earrings, necklaces,
bracelets, pendants, brooches and
jewelry:

- After drying, The Coffee wood slices are
first sanded and varnished. Later the coffee
wood slices  are made light sensitive with
a liquid light sensitive gelatin silver chloride
photo emulsion.

This Liquid silver emulsion I manufacture
Myself and I call it : L U C E N T A
It is Completely Non Toxic
with no hazardous ingredients.

This type of
photographic art on Coffee wood is very rare
and beautiful, These gelatin silver prints on
coffee wood could be called CAFETYPES.

VARNISHES

Before making light sensitive,
To Keep The natural look of the
wood its pores are filled with a colorless
transparent medium like a plain gelatin
solution or polyvinyl alcohol glue.
both are non toxic and odorless.

To hide natural dark spots or
blemishes appearing  sometimes in
some of the coffee wood slices:

the gelatin or pva glue is applied with
a brush on the side of the wood that
is to be made light sensitive, and,
while the coating still humid and
sticky or tacky, dry saw dust is made
to fall on it. After drying it is lightly
sanded.

- a second coat of gelatin or pva
is given, dried and sanded.

The saw dust is naturally from the
same coffee wood obtained when
the slices are made.

spotless coffee wood pieces do not
need to be dusted with the coffee wood
dust. They are just varnished with the
pva glue or plain gelatin solution, dried,
and coated with the liquid silver emulsion.

If polyvinyl alcohol glue is used, the
coating must be sanded completely.
It has to be made rough otherwise the
gelatin silver emulsion will not adhere.

PVA will not darken the wood on
application of same, gelatin solution
will impart a " wet " look making the
wood about 25% darker, But I prefer it
over PVA. (Lucenta adheres better to it )
for varnishing the finished piece
see data here: Archival Finish pertinent
data is found at the bottom of that page.

Instead of Coffee Wood, you can use any
other type of wood. Make it light sensitive
and work it as described above
